THREEPENNY DAY AT ETON.

One of Eton's most ancient customs, Threepenny Day, was observed on February 27 by the distribution of new threepenny pieces to collegers. The coins were distributed after luncheon in the College Hall by the Provost, Dr JEdmond Warre, the gift being confined to ti\e seventy scholars on the foundation. Threepenny Day is an institution founded nearly 400 years ago by Roger Lupton, who was Provost from 1502 to 1535. Lupton was a considerable benefactor to the college, and the chantry still called by his name was supplied by him with ornaments. To serve it he gave the college the Manor of Puryton, in Hertford-shire.-He arranged with the fellows for an annual distribution of money, to take place,on the anniversary of his death. .The provost received 2s 8d ; the 'fellows, headmaster, and Lupton's chaplain Is 4d, the other chaplaiiis and £he usher Sd, the clerks 6d, and the scholars. and choristers Id. each. The scholars still get this penny in threepenny pieces distributed to them on February 27, the other twopence being from the gift of Provost Bost, who succeeded Lupton. The distribution to the Provost,' headmaster, and other members of the college, who are on the foundation, was stopped when several reforms were introduced nearly forty years ago.
