Haybittle of Trent hu.u, Uppor Hutt. Born in .London in Ifr22 he w*s, with hia only brother Mr R. B. Hay bittln of Wellington, who survive* him early left, an orphan. Educated at Vilmot Academy, K<>nt, by his jjrandfatlur, ho was intended for a commercial c»reer, but the rollicking sea-songs then pre\ alcnt, and his being a great student of geography decided him to adopt the eea as a profession and in 1841 he was second mato of the ship "Hero of Malone," a vessel which brought a large party of Scotch colliers to Newcastle. Hearing oi New Zealand and the tempting wages cbtainable there, he left his chip and landed in this colony in 1842. Writing to hia brother in London the latter, with his wife and two children, Mrs E, Bead of Mai ton and W. G. Haybittle.of Feilding, was also tempted to cross the ocean, and the brother* entered iDto business as lightermen in Wellington in which occupation they did very well for many year?, but on the construction of the Queen's Wharf tbey found their cccupation gone. The deceased then entered tbe employ of W. Waring Taylor with whom he remained for many years*. In 1876 he settled at Trontham when he resided until his death. Mr Haybit:le was I married in 18f>6 and leaves a large grown up family of sons and daughters. One of the most entertaining of men, it was n great pleasure to sit rouud the wiuerfire and hear the old gentleman reco int hi 3 exploits with the mighty Leviat lans of the deep, hi* boat having several times been struck with the flukes of a dying whale. Genial, affablt and charitable he would never let the hungry sjo empty away, and under the severest provocation was never known to utter a harsh word. Messrs W. G. rbu R. F.
