FIRE IN FELLED BUSH

(By Telegraph—Press Association.)

DARGAVILLE, January 17.

Strenuous efforts resulted in keeping in check a fire which it is alleged was maliciously sot alight early on Saturday morning in a block of 70 acres of felled bush adjoining and bounded upon three sides by the mile and a half frontage of the southern boundary of the Waipoua forest.

Twenty men under Mr. Courtney Biggs, officer in charge of the forest, worked throughout Saturday and Sunday, and by 6 o'clock last night the fire was under control. The fire did not cross the forest boundary.

Mr. Biggs had refused the owner of the section, and also other settlers permission to light any bush within an area contiguous to the forest owing to the "dry weather.
