AMONG "MOVIE" STARS

Although it may prove a dire disappointment to a largo number of people, it njust be stated on very good authority that the popular notion that Hollywood parties resemble a Stroheim orgy is entirely fallacious —that is, speaking generally, says a London correspondent. This, on consideration, can well be understood, for drink to the movie actoi is most injurious, and lato nights can•uot be kept if one has to be on location very often as early as 7 o'clock in the morning. Of course, a reputation for fastness stimulates interest amongst a certain section of the public, but nevertheless this reputation is often quite fallacious. '• One astounding trait that is displayed by "movie" stars is their generous praise of their rivals. Earl van Vechten, the author of "Nigger iSoaven," said, after a recent visit to Hollywood, that never before had so many pretty girls told him how much prettier other pretty girls were. "Never before or i elsewhere," he continues, "have I heard virtues, talents, domestic and professional, extolled as whole-heartedly as \ they are at Hollywood. Whenever, in conversation with a star, I inadvertently dropped another star's name it was the signal for encomiums, not modest or casual, but as a rule whopping, expansive, exaggerated." One night Louella Parsons took Mr. van Vechten to Bebe Daniels's house, where Constance Talmadge, Betty Compson, Jauies Kirkwood, Lila Lee, Jack Pickford, and Harold Lloyd were gathered. It was a very informal party, and Bebe and her mother were the most charming hostesses imaginable. The display of refreshments was rather formidable, but movie stars are apparently blessed with good appetites, and it was soon demolished. After supper some played bridge, whilst others talked shop and unfolded new screen plays, . Strange as it may seem, this is a very favourite pastime at Hollywood's parties. Books are also discussed, and it may. interest quite a few that Bebe Daniels is an assiduous book collector. Some of the most orginal parties are given by Aileen Pringle, who has a lovely Spanish mission home. It appears that the height of ambition of every moving picture star is to possess an Italian or Spanish house, a Rolls Eoyce, and a white police dog. Carmel Myers, Florence Vidor, Lilian Gish are apparently not such very extraordinary people. Some may be glad to hear this, whilst, of course, others of a sensation loving disposition will be most disappointed.
