AUCKLAND, Thl« Day. -Good progress is being made witk the construction of tba railway dvriavtion from Auckland to Weitfleld, sear Otmhuhn, which will give two means of access to the city. For some month* about 400 men have been employed, Thig number represents the maximum that ca,n be profitably used, and operation! are being carried on at the largest number of points possible. la the Purewa tunnel and the drire at Orakci Neck three shifts are being worked. The- tunnel is making very good progress. It :s 30 chains long, •and passes under St. Heller's road at a mile beyond St. John's College. The tunnellers are having a good time. They are *H' experienced men, working under contract, and most of them have learned their job in a hard school— the notorious railway tunnels of Nortk •Auckland, where the worst country ever known 'was met and mastered. It is long since they have had a job so close to the attractions of a town. Other workers may. come and go, bat the tunnellers stay on. With them an several very sage and expert horses, which haul the truck loads of spoiL and know all about the points and crossings. The excavation has eatea far- into the neck of land separating the Orakei Basin from the sea. Two big cuts are being made, one by a steam shovel and the other by a gang of men who bring the spoil dowa into the trucks- running in the drive. This gang'is composed of 10 Italians, who came here lately from Queensland. None of them can speak more than a.few words of English, but all are good workers. .The men in the drive are Britishers, and the embank* ment gang is a mixture of Britishers anil Dalmatians.
