LIEUT POWELL KILLED

INTERNATIONAL TENNIS PLAYER

Lieut. R. B. Powell, of the Canadian Infantry, who was an international tennis player, has been killed in France.

[Lieut. Robert Branks Powell enlisted in the Canadian infantry, and had seen considerable service at the front. He was born in Victoria, British Columbia, on 2nd April, 1881. He was private secretary to Sir H. Joly do Lolbiniere, K.C.M.G., Lieut-Governor of British Columbia, 1900-1904; and was in charge of the arrangements in connection wifc'li the visit or the Prince and Princess of Wales to British' Columbia, in 1901, when he was attached to the staff of Lord Minto, Governor-General of Canada. In 1904 he was appointed to Government service in Fiji. He was employed on the Governor's staff and on tho Western Pacific High Commission in 1905 and 1906. He passed his 1 final examination for the English Bar in 1909, and was a Fellow of tihe Royal Colonial Institute. He learnt tennis on his father's courts at Victoria, Columbia, and was four times champion of British Columbia. Amongst his successes were the championships of Fiji, 1905-6, of the Pacific N.W. States of America, of the State of Oregon, of Scotland, of Vienna (when he defeated M. Decngis (the French player), the Northern Championship, All England Plate, Sussex ChampionShip, and Championship Doubles at Eastbourne, Queen's Club, Cannes. He was also in tho semi-final cfhampionis/hip doubles at Wimbledon with K. Powell in 1909. In 1908 he was in the semifinal of the All Comers' singles at AVimbledon, the event which when last played was termed the world's championship. When in England he represented Middlesex and has a great record in winning prizes at singles, doubles, and combined doubles. Lieutenant Powell represented Canada in the Davis Cup match played in America, 1914,- but the Australasian team (composed of Brookes and Wilding), which won the cup, beat him and his team. He'was a very keen horseman, and won amateur races on the flat in Canada and Fiji.]
