WINTER RACES

NOTES FROM TRENTHAM (By "Sir Lancelot.") Heavy rain fell overnight at Trentham -making the going heavy. The trial gallop, the outside of the course proper, was open, but few horses were asked to go against the watch.- Mount Victoria went half a. mile in 56sec, and his stable mate, Pimpernel, took a second longer. Try Fluke was in front of Admiral Soult at the end of six furlongs, run in Imin 25sec. King Soult took a second longer, a useful gallop considering he went alone. Some interesting exhibitions of jumpIng were given. Fashion Plate (H. Thompson) went twice round over the schooling fences, jumping eight hurdles cleanly and cleverly. Ruffy, Becola, and Captain Jack started together for a school. The firstnamed pair went on together, taking the sod wall, two brush fences, and two rails twice. Bercola always appeared to hold the Aucklanders safe. They afterwards did another round on the grass. Captain Jack refused at the logs, and got over at the second attempt. He was given three rounds, and appeared to improve as he went along, finishing .up well. He then did a circuit on the sand in company with Ingenkender. Sportsman and Northern went once round over the bij* fences, taking fine, and making no mistakes. Grit Lawless also did a circuit and tapped one, but got round safely. Julian and Royal Arms went twice round over the schooling hurdles. Both jumped well. Royal Arms, considering he had only been jumped three times previously, gave a pleasing display. The hack steeplechaser Lesso, did two rounds of the big fences, jumping in good style. ' Paritutu, alone, did a circuit of the big fences, and jumped splendidly. A. Goodwin's team, Morning, The Spaniard, and Golden Water, weire, out, but were not asked to do much. H. also arrived from Hastings the previous night with Player, Bracken, Immensity, and Rigo Park. They were sent light tasks. Player and Rigo Park both bear a solid appearance. The balance of the Hawkes Bay horses ar© expected to-night. Stuart Waddell is bringing five and W. Stone two. About the last to appear were Altcar and jMerrie Guy, who went together two rounds over the schooling hurdles. Both fenced well, but Altcar has too much pace for his companion. It was Rapid, not Cloudy Down, that arrived from Gisborne by boat yesterday. Cloudy Dawn was sent home to Auckland after winning at the East Coast meeting. E. Pope's luck is evidently right out. Matawerewere broke aboard the wrong boat and went to aboard the wrong boats and went to Auckland. Probably this accounts for Cloudy Dawn not being brought down. WELLINGTON LIEDERTAFEL The Liedertafel will give its first concert this season in the Concert Chamber of the Town Hall on Wednesday, 22nd July, when a varied programme of the society's usual high standard will be presented. Further particulars will be duly announced ; but, in the meantime, the attention of subscribers and the public is called to the fact that this year the Liedertafel comes of age, and celebrates its twenty-first birthday. .It is now the only musical society in Wellington with a continuous record of twenty-one years' work, and, with the exception of a well-known suburban glee club, it is the only male voice choir in our city giving public performances. In view of the special circumstances of this year an appeal is made for an increased measure of public support. The officers .of the society will especially welcome any assistance from those who were identified with the' body in its earlier days.
