TO KELBUEN BY TRAM
ELECTRIC LIFTS TO THE TERRACE. The City Engineer (Mr. W. H. Morton) las at present wider consideration a scheme to bring the residents of Kelburn and upper Taitville into touch with the City Tramway 6ystem, which may at some future date be given effect to. The proposition to lift people up to Wellington Terrace in electric elevators is one that was propounded several years ago, but never got beyond the proposal stage. That is the first and most novel idea in connection with electric tramway, communication with Kelburn. The idea, in brief, is to erect large elevators, (similar to those which feed the London "tubes") at Churoh Street (off Boulcott Street). to take passengers up to Wellington Terrace, and thence convey them to Kelburn by a- line that would traverse part of the Terrace, Mount Street, Salamanca Road, round the Victoria College block to Kelburn Parade, arid so on to upper Taitville, connecting with the Karori line between t'he viaduct and the tunnel. Though consideration is being given to this scheme, it is not likely that'such a work will be put in. hand until the conclusion of the war. The data that may be-workod.up at present will be useful to the new City Couhoil, and the scheme may be found to be less costly in the long run than any other possible means of tramway, communication between the City, and the popular western heights.
