ESCAPE FROM SOMES ISLAND
LONG SWIM TO PETONE. Two young German prisoners of war —Edwin Balke and Paul Woolf—made their escape from Soni'.s Island yesterday morning by swimming to the mainland. They left the island with their clothes strapped to their backs at 8.15 o'clock, and swam a mile and a half to the Petone beach, where they landed shortly after 10 o'clock. The water was oold and fairly choppy at the time, and the escapees had rather an adventurous time." One had a seizure of cramp on the journey, and Balke lost his clothes. The men gave themselves up to the police at Petone on their arrival, and thev were little tie worse for- their undertaking. They stated to the poke that they were engaged on the island doing road work, and as they considered this more in the nature of convicts work than the duty of prisoners of war they decided to escape and make a complaint.
