SERIOUS GRASS FIRES
HEAVY LOSS OF PASTURE. (By Teleeraphl-Press Association.) Blenheim, January 30. A grass fire broke out in the Awatoro district yesterday. The fire covered a large extent of country, and is spreading rapidly. A largo area of the Upton Downs property. has been devastated. The homestead was saved with difficulty. Despite all efforts the fire spread over the Medway district. A number of settlers lost heavily by the destruction of sheep pastures. It is reported this afternoon that the fire is spreading in a westerly direction, having travelled a distance of 20 miles.
