LINER STRIKES REEF
MATAKANA WRECKED IN BAHAMAS ENTIRE CREW SAVED NEW YORK, May 8. The Shaw Savill and Albion steamship Matakana (8048 tons) struck on the Planas Cays, a long reef east of Acklin Island (Bahamas) some days ago. The American steamer Panama picked up the entire crew of 82 men from open boats 11 hours later. The Matakana was built at Glasgow in 1921 for the Shaw Savill and Albion Company, Ltd., and has paid frequent visits to New Zealand ports.
