FENDALTON PARK

POLL OF RATEPAYERS TO BE TAKEN DECISION OF WAIMAIRI COUNTY COUNCIL A poll of ratepayers affected by the proposal to buy a park for Fendalton will be taken by the Waimairi County Council. The ratepayers will be asked to authorise the raising of the loan necessary for the purchase of the selected site. The council made this decision at a meeting last evening. The Fendalton Domain Board wrote asking the council to take a poll. The selected site was the property of Miss K. Gerard and the price was £3250. The board asked the council to provide for a loan to cover this, the cost of the poll, the first year's charges for interest and sinking fund, and contingencies, say, £2OO. An option to purchase the site had been obtained. Cr. G. G. Gardner said there were certain unsatisfactory features about the scheme and he was not going to take it on himself to recommend the council to take the poll. He asked that a vote be taken so that each councillor could exercise his judgment, lie thought the other suggested site would have been of more benefit to the school children. The County Clerk, Mr G. S. Cowper, said there had practically been a request from the ratepayers that a poll be taken. That was the decision of the meeting called to consider the suggested domain. Cr. F. S. Scott said the effect of the meetings was that the Domain Board, in conjunction with the council, had practically no option, but must take the poll. Mr Cowper explained the steps that would be necessary. It would be at least three months before the poll could be taken. Cr. W. J. Walter moved that the poll be taken. This was seconded by Cr. C. E. Cross, and carried unanimously.
