The Somaliland campaign.

London, April 27. — Heavy fighting has taken place in Somaliland, between the Mullah's forces and the Mijeataiu natives, who are friendly to the British. Tbe town of Illig, in Italian Somaliland, was bombarded and the Sultan, who is an ally of the Mullah, was captured. London, April 28.— The details of the capture of Illig, in Italian Somaliland, show that the British naval force captured the place after it had been discovered that it was unassailable by bombardment from the sea front. At dawn on April 21st, in the presence of the Italian gunboat Volturno, Rear- Admiral Atkinson Willis, -of H.M.S. Hyaointh, with 700 bluejackets and marines, from the cruisers Hyaointh, Fox and Mohawk, and 125 men of the Ist battalion of the Hampshire regiment, landed at Cullule rivei. After passing through the surf the British force then attacked the zariba and town of Illig in flank and rear, -and gallantly carried them by storm, after a sharp action at; close quarters, the defence being obstinate. The Dervishes were expelled after losing heavily. The Italian and British flags were hoisted in the town and palace with the assent of the Sultan, Osman Mahmoud, who has been transferred to the loyal Mijjariens. In the attack on the town three of the British were killed, and four severely, and two slightly, wounded. There were no casualties among the officers.
