Murderous Attack on a Cninese in the Cow Case. Auckland, Monday. Thomas Quoi, who was interpreter in the Kingsland cow case, reported to the police that about 10.30 o'clock on Saturday night an attempt was made to stab him by a Chinaman in Queen Street. Bankruptcy of W. Stimpson. At the Bankruptcy Court to-day Walter Stimpson applied for his discharge, but His Honour refused to grant it. Terrible Fire at Levuka. Files of Fiji papers to hand, by the Wainui, contain particulars of a terrible fire at Levuka, by which property to the value of £40,000 was destroyed. Mr Gold-Smith. It is understood that Mr Q-old-Smith, District Surveyor, Tauranga, has been transferred to Gisborne, vice Mr Weetman, who has been promoted to the post of Chief -Surveyor in the Taranaki District. Heath os Mary Ann Wilson. Auckland, Tuesday. Mary Ann Wilson, who was" recently stabbed at Archill, died at the hospital to-day. Immediately befdre dying she made a deposition, before Justices, to the effect that the injuries were inflicted by Louis Payett, the man who was arrested some time ago on suspicion., The Brigaiitine Clansman. Last Friday at Gisborne the Auckland brigantine Clansman, : lately stranded during a gale, was sold to J. Nelson, Auckland, for £90. Auckland Murder Case. Auckland, Wednesday. Louis Payet appeared on remand at the Police Court this morning to answer the charge of the murder of Mary Aim Wilson,' and was again remanded. Hugh Shortland. appeared on behalf of the prisoner. Payet came to New Zealand from New Calidonia. He states that he was not sent out as a convict. Harbour Board v. JLanigan. Russell and Campbell have advised the Harbour Board not to submit to further arbitration, but to leave the contractor for the Calliope dock, Lanigan, to his remedy at law. Inquest on Mary Ann Wilson. Auckland, Thursday. At the inquest, held yesterday, on the body of the woman Mary Ann Wilson, a verdict of wilful murder was returned agaiot Payet. -■■; Gathering Rock Oysters out of Season. : Yesterday morning Henrj Mays was arrested, on a warrant of fcommitment, fpr paying 'failed tp pay 4% U*, court costs in the casein which \e was upon a charge of having gathered, rock oysters during the close season.
