Some leading and local matter is crowded out of this issue. We are authorised to state, Messrs Hamilton Cuming and Peter Dungan will offer < themselves as candidates to represent Westland hrthfrnext Parliament. Parliament was formally prorogued yesterday by Commission until September Ist. It is understoad the dissolution will take place on Thursday. There was a meeting of the Hospital Committee last evening. Present— Messrs Fowler, (President), in the" chair,- Heinz, King, Eckmann, Sargison, Linstrom, Walker, Macdonald, Meyer, Upjohn, Peake, and A. W. Bock. A letter was received from the Big Dam Committee forwarding the names of the committee. A letter was read asd received from the Colonial Secretary's Office, stating that a voucher for £558 would be passed. Intimation was received that Mr B. Lyons had been appointed delegate for the Stafford Committee. A letter was received from Mr Twiss thanking the committee for admitting him to the Hospital, aaJ the Doctor and Mr Seuter, for the treatment he had received. The Secretary

acknowledged the receipt of £ 7 12s from the owners of the Darcy Pratt, and £41 13s from the County Council. The House Committee report was read and adopted. The battery just received from Melbourne being unworkable the matter was referred to the Doctor iind the Secretary. It was resolved to call for • tenders for 50 cords of firewood, and also, in consequence of a recent alarm of fire at the institution to arrange for having the chimneys swept more frequently. The meeting then adjourned.

In another column the electors of Totara District will perceive the Hon. W. Gisborne's address. -The late hour at which it reached us precludes our noticing it in this issue.

The following singular advertisement appears in the columns of a contemporary : — "A. B. has just received, ex , a uplendid assortment of new seeds. As he took particular care in selecting the very best variety, and as this is the first year that lie has opened a shop in that line of business gardeners aad farmers can make sure of their crops, if the seeds were bought by A. 8., that there is no old seed on the premises, and consequently cannot be sold or mixed." The italics are our own. The- advertiser is evidently not quite sure if he bought the -seeds. If be did not buy them, how did lie come by them ?

Kissers beware 1 A pair of lovers have been brought before Mr Chance, the magistrate of the district, charged with kissing each other on Tooting Common. They were bound over to keep the peace for six months, and mulct £1 3s for costs. I doubt this will atop the kissing, for it seems to me that the lovers will kiss and " Chance " it.

An awkward accident is thus reported by the telegraphic correspondent of ths Auckland Star:— The Rev. Mr Calder met withau accident yesterday. While returning from visiting a sick man, as he rode along he was accosted by some ladies, but, while with his face turned towards them, his horse wandered off the right path, falling unexpectedly into an old Maori pit, and atnid the terrified screams of his fair audience the Hex. gentleman disappeared from view. The horse scrambled out first and bolted in the direction of Hamilton. Eortunately this esteemed clergyman escaped serious injury.

A long leader in the Patea Mail has the following promising opening; — In the old days in Australia a story was current of a benighted savage who was decoyed into church one Sunday by some well-meaning settler. The only thing in the whole service that was not Greek to "Billy " was something about " daily bread." This he thought was decidedly promising. He hung about for gome time after the congregation dispersed, and at length walked away disappointed and sorrowful. But next Sunday, to the unspeakable joy of the well meaning settler, he returned. Again he heard about ' daily bread,' again watched the parson depart, and again went home disappointed, and this time angry. Next Sunday, however, he caused further joy by again putting in an ji rF MCiuuo, Dut ikoio into iiu unpeuirem look about "Billy" that made his patron feel uneasy. The service went on and "Billy" sat with clenched fist, and fixed eyes. No sooner were the words "daily bread " uttered, than he sprang to his feet, shook his fist wildly, and demanded, to the utter confusion of the parson, "What for yabber yabber 'daily bread,' and nebber nebber gib it?"

A Parliameatay return, moved for by Sir C« Dilke, shows, with respect to the various Parliamentary constituencies in the United Kingdom, the total number of electors on the register now in force. Id the Counties of England and Wales there are 883,649 electors; in the Boroughs, 1,563,319; and .in the Universities, 13,031; making a total of 2,459,999. The Irish Counties have 172,570 electors; the Boroughs), 55,247; and the University, Dublin. 3472; making a total of 231,289. The Scotch Counties have 92,310 electors; the Boroughs, 204,142; and the Universities, 11,489; makiug a total of 307,941. There are' thus 2,999,229 electors on the register for the whole of the United Kingdom.
