GREAT FIRE IN CHRISTCHURCH.
CANTERBURY HALL DESTROYED

CHRISTCHURCH, Nov. 11. A great fire occurred in! the city tonight. The Canterbury Hall—comprising Fullers' Vaudeville 'JJneatr© ("His Majesty's"), the Canterbury Industrial Association and Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association's rooms, and the Alexandria Hail —was destroyed. Tho building, valued at £21,000, was recently offered to the City Council for a Town Hall, but the proposal to buy was rejected bjr the ratepayers. In His Majesty's Theatre was the city organ presented by the Government to tho people of Cbristchurch after the 1906 Exhibition. It was valued at £'5000. The fire started in trie dress circle of His Majesty's Theatre. jt took two hours' hard fighting before the brigades got the mastery. A fresh breeze carried sparks to adjoining buildings, which were in danger for some time. Stevens' druggist warehouse, next the "Press" Office, caught, but fortunately the flame 3 were subdued. The insurances are not available.
