Machine Gun. who holds the New Zealand record for five furlongs, viz., SSsecs., is the sire of Blast, who won the High Weight Welter Handicap at Rfinrlwick on Saturday in lmin. 13|8. Tho Duke of Portland won the Moderato Plate, one mile and a half, at Bath on August 23rd 3 with his Carbino colt Full Play, a three-year-old. Mr E. J. Watt's, winnings, with his filly Ventura- at the A.J.C. Spring Meeting,. and Bridge's third in the Randwick Plate, amounted to £2867. The strong gathering of New Zealand sportsmen present at the A.J.C. Spring Meeting were tlisapointed at the form of the New Zealand horses at Randwick . Victorian owners secured £1800 of the stake money provided at the A.J.C. Spring Meeting. During tho four days of the A.J.C. Spring Meeting 150,000 people werepresent at Randwick.' The further payment in connection with tho New Zealand Cup is due on October 20th, when first forfeits for the Canterbury Welcome Stakes, the Derby, and the Oaks have to be declared. Luko Wilson raav ride Kilosteri in the N.Z. Cup. " ! Tho Derby Avinner, Sunstar, is to take his sire's place at Childwickbury Stud next season, and his fee has been h'xed at 300 guineas, the amount exacted for the services of Sundridge when he was sect to France. In his first season, however, his list will be limited. The brood mare Dudu (by Somnus — Fame), who was owned by the veteran j trainer Mr. E. Cutts, was destroyed : last week. She was 26 years old, and ; her owner took this course rather than ; fee her linger and suffer. Dudu was] fairly successful as a brood mare, ■ among her successful progeny being F.panlet, Shrapnel 1 Shell, Djin Djin, Lo'lah, Stratagem, and Safety Pin. The last-named was a winner at Ashburton f, fortnight ago. i Mr. T. H. Lowry lias apparently fully ' mado up his mind to give Bobnkoff s \ further opportunity to win distinction as a stayer, the Finland gelding having been nominated for the Canterbury and Auckland Cups. By all accounts Bobnkoff is galloping in fine form, and whatever he may or may- not be able to do over a long course, we may oxpod to .find him performing brilliantly at .seven years old. Bobrikoff, it may bo remarked, only contested one .■ace last season, and that effort, which was in May, resulted in failure. During the passing of a thunderstorm over the vicinity of Wagga recently, a. couple of valuable horses weio struck by lightning at Wattle Vale. Tho brood mares Fortressa and Hemlock were sheltering under a tree m company with a couple of yearlings, and when tho tree was struck both Fortressa nnd a colt bjr Little Toy out of Hemlock was" killed. Fortressa, who was on -i visit to Little Toy, was a good performer some seasons back in the colours of Mr. \V. G. Higgins, and was by Birganbil from Fortress, by Ne'jkorsgat. Hemlock, the dam of the colt that was killed, is a half-sister by .Padlock to York, the Gftind National HjrdJo i.vinner. Hemlock and the other yearling escaped uninjured, but an opossum in tho hollow of the tree wa.% also numbered with the .slain. Tho colb that was killed was looked upon as tho pick of the yearlings at the Wattle Vale stud.
