During the passing of a thunderstorm over the vicinity of Wagga recently, a. couple of valuable horses weio struck by lightning at Wattle Vale. Tho brood mares Fortressa and Hemlock were sheltering under a tree m company with a couple of yearlings, and when tho tree was struck both Fortressa nnd a colt bjr Little Toy out of Hemlock was" killed. Fortressa, who was on -i visit to Little Toy, was a good performer some seasons back in the colours of Mr. \V. G. Higgins, and was by Birganbil from Fortress, by Ne'jkorsgat. Hemlock, the dam of the colt that was killed, is a half-sister by .Padlock to York, the Gftind National HjrdJo i.vinner. Hemlock and the other yearling escaped uninjured, but an opossum in tho hollow of the tree wa.% also numbered with the .slain. Tho colb that was killed was looked upon as tho pick of the yearlings at the Wattle Vale stud.
