DEFEAT OF SIGNORINETTA.
Siw-norinetta did not long retain her champion three-year-old honours, being beaten in the Royal Stakes, li mile, at Newbury, by Whifea Eaglo, who, the previous week at Ascot, canterod away with the Fifteenth Biennial Sta;v<y?. for which odds of 6 to 4 wero laid on Rhodora; who ran nowhere. In the Newbury race- White Eagle carried 8.7 to Sis-norinatta's 8.2. each b?ing'quoted at 13 to 8 against. After a great finish White Eaglo beat another three-year-old, Quoreus, 7.2, by a head, with'Linacre a similar distance further off, and then Signorinetta. The race is said to have been run all against Signorinetta, .being very slow for the first six furlongs, the pace only really being ■ put on for. tho.last' half-mile. As the full clisianco was cut out in 2.9 3-5, it does not-sound as if the raca coul'l have been really, slow at any part, but it ovidontly was, as during tre some afternoon Spate won the Newbiirv Cup. If mile, in "2.29, which is 1 l-sth soc. faster than the previous b^st in England:- for that distance. It is almrs'b .unnecessary for' hid to add that English courses are measured in the centre of tho running track, and consequently where the raoo is. not over a straight courso considerably loss than the advertised diatanco is covered. An Australian who fiff the Derby attributes Whito Eaglo's poor form in that .race to tho fact that ho was short-of work, rvnd his form since supports that contention. Hewitt rodo White Eagle when that colt ran third in- tha Two Thousand, but, unfortunately for him-K-^lf, the NewiZoalai:d?.r ha- rrt ben on him since, owine to some-disagreement with Mr Hall Walker anont that particular race.
