GISBORNE, August 9. Messrs Woodbine Johnson, A. F. Hardy and Captain Morris, havo announced themselves as candidates for tho East Coast. At a meeting of the Liberal party last night, it was resolved to select the best man, and run him only for the Poverty Bay part of the constituency.

INVERCARGILL, August 10. Mr J. R. Outhbertson,oneof the candidates for Wallace, . published an address to the electors. He announces himself as an out-and-out liberal. Mr Hirst and Mr J. P. Joyce will contest the seat along with him.

WELLINGTON, August 9. Ifc is confidentially stated that Mr Macandrew will stand for Port Chalmors. Mr Evans Brown, in accordance with a determi-

nation, publicly announced "some months agdj ! .does, hot intend to seek re-election for Ashley, but will- probably stand for some other seat. Messrs W. H. Levin, W. Hutchinson, George Hunter, and Dr Newman are in the field for Wellington. The election is likely to be a very mixed one.

TIMARU, August 10.

Mr Turnbull has telegraphed from Wellington stating that he will address tho electors of Timaru next week. A requisition, promising him support, was circulated in Timaru to-day and largely signed. Judge Ward has replied to the telegram from a private meeting of electors, held yesterday, to the effect that he wished to take time to consider whether he will consent to be nominated for Timaru- His friends say that if he consents to stand he is sure to be elected and made Attorney-General of the new Minstry. If he stands on the Liberal interests his chance of election is good, but otherwise he has no chance of being returned, more especially if te is likely to associate himself with his friends.
