BOARD OF EDUCATION.

Monday, Due. 15. The weekly Board w;i3 held at the usual hour. Present — Mr 0. C. Bo wen (chairman), Messrs Q-. Gould, VV. Montgomery, J. N. Tosswill, J. Inglis. The modiflcd plans for the East Christchurch school, in Gloucester street east, were submitted and approved. A letter was read from the East Christchurch committee, pointing out the crowded state of St John's schoolroom, and asking for a grant of £50 as a contribution towards the enlargement of the building, such £50 to be accepted by the St John's committees in lieu of rent for increased accommodation. It was pointed out that the Board could not make a grant for additions to any building not vested in the Superintendent, and the Secretary was therefore instructed to write to the East Christchurch committee for further information with re.-pect to the £50 being paid for rent, on which account the Board had power to vote the sum required. The matter of tho contributions to be made by tho East and West Christchurch districts towards tho erection of school buildings was gone into, and it was decided that tho Government be requested to take no further steps towards levying the rates in Christchurch previously recommended, until it is decided what amounts will be appropriated for school buildings. If the amounts recommended by the Board be passed, a larger sum must be levied than was at first decided on. The amount of rate to be levied will probably be about £2000 in each district. Tho remainder of the business related to country schools.
