The Derby was ran on June 3rd. The weather was brilliant. The attendance was enormous. Lord Hastings bay colt Melton carried off the prize, Capt. 0. Bowling's bay colt Paradox being second, and Mr Chadwick's Royal Hampton third. Fred Archer rode Melton, Webb - was on Paradox, and Gile3 on Royal Hampton. Just before the race, 7 to 4 was offered against Melton, and freely taken. A good start was Becured. Sheoraton was first away, closely attended by Xaintrailles and Royal Hampton. After 300 yards running, Royal Hampton took a clear lead, and continued leading to the mile post. The field closed for a few lengths, but nt the top of the hill, Royal Hampton again took a clear lead. On entering the straight, howevor, ho fell away beaten, leaving Paradox on the lower ground ahead of Melton, the pair having the race entirely to themselves. At every stride Melton drew nearer to Paradox, and finally passed him, winning a most exciting race. The Prince and Princess of Wales and all their sons and daughters who came by special train, the Dukos of Edinburgh and Cambridge and other royal perl sonages were present. They were warmly greeted on their arrival. The Jockey Archer after his victory was the recipient of an ovation. A message announcing the name of | the winner was transmitted from London to New York m three minutes, about the quickest time yet made between the two cities. The Mainhector Cup, run on May 28th, with 2000 soys added, and the handicap sweepstakes of 25 soys each, was won by Mr Jordine's four-year-old colt Borneo; Mr Hungerford'a five-year-old mare Xema came m second, and Mr Chalmers' four-year-old colt Chroma 800 third. Borneo made the running with Cole well up. When half the course had been covered, Borneo assumed the lead, and retained it to the end, winning by a length, despite the resolute challenge of Xema to gain first place. At the ! meeting on May 27th the Whitsuntide Plate, of 3000 soys, for two-year-olds, was won by Mr Geek's bay filly Philosopher. The Epsom Grand Prize for three-year-olds was run on i June 4th, and was won by Mr R. Wight's bay I colt Bird of Freedom. Six started for the race. The Oaks stakes were won by Lord Cadogan's bay filly Lonely. The winner was ridden by Fred Archer.
