THE MASSACRE AT THE WHITE CLIFFS.
THE ERECTION OF A MONUMENT IN MEMORY OF THE VICTIMS. Several gentlemen met last evening in the Insti trite, and formed themselves into a committee, for the purpose of raising a fund to erebt a monument in memory of the Rev. J. Whiteley, Lieutenant Gascoigno, and the other victims who were so brutally murdered at the White Cliffs, on the 13th February last. The Rev. W. Watkin was voted to the ohair. Mr. J. Flight proposed and Mr. Hulke seconded, " That the memorial Bhonld be for the whole of those who fell on the 13th February, 1869, and be placed in some conspicuous part of the New Plymonth Cemetery." — Carried. Mr. J. Flight proposed and Mr. Hulke seconded, " That tho sum given by each person shall not exceed 55." Mr. Q. Young proposed as an amendment, and Mr. Kelly seconded, " That the sum given by each person shall not exceed 10s." The amendment on being put, was carried. Mr. T. Kelly proposed and Mr. N. Hookeb seconded, " That the town be divided into four districts, intersected by the Devon-line and the Huatoki ; and that two members of the Committee be appointed to eaoh district." — Carried. Mr. Kelly proposed and Mr. Veale seconded, " That application be made to the varions Boards of Road Commissioners to colleot in their respective districts, except Nos. 14, 16, 18, and 19."— Carried. Mr. Kelly proposed and Mr. Hulke seconded, " That the officers in oharge of outposts be invited to oollect subscriptions ac their respective stat ions." — Carried Mr. Hulke proposed and Mr. Lawrence seconded, " That an invitation to contribute to this fund be forwarded to the General Government." — Carried. Mr. Hulke proposed and Mr. Hooker seoonded, " That the Wesleyan Ministers iv each town in New Zealand be invited to cooperate with the Com m i ttee ." — Carried." A few other resolutions of an unimportant character were then passed, and the Committee adjourned nntil called together by the Chairman.
