OBITUARY.

MR. JOSEPH' BARLEY. ( It is with deep regret \va have to announce the death of Mr Joseph j Auty ilarleyi, a well-known And , highly respected citizen, whiqh cc- , burred at his residence* Trafalgar ; Square,at hai.t-p&s't six last ovening. I The deceased, who was born in Nelson iq 1843, was a son of the late Mr Charles Harle.y, & ve,ry early pioneer tif this distrstejbv H6 was educated at. Nelson College,, arH in 1858 received an appointment i . the Resident Magistrate's office, lu 2s' 7ember, 1863, he was appointed deputy clerk to the District Court, and assistant clerk, to the Magistrate's Court-,, ajnd ho held this position for Ik} nib considerable time. He also acted as collector of the sheep and dog'tax and education rates. In 1868 the late Mr Harley was made clerk to the Resident Magistrates' Court, and a year later he received the appointment of Deputy-Registrar of the Supreme Court, and Returning Officer, and was afterwards appointed Provincial Accountant) a position be held for twelve years. In JB7l he |eft the do detriment service to enter into business as a brewer, an occup'atiptl which he has followed with very considerable Success up to the present time; This late Mr. Harley also took: a very keen interest in ' 3port, arid in addition to being hon. Treasurer of the Nelson Jockey Club, a position .he held for many years, was. also President of the Nelson Trotting Club, Vice-President of the Nelson Rugby Unjon, and other athletic bodies. For over twenty years he served the city faithfully and well aa a Councillor, and during the years 1899-1901 he held the office of Mayor On the 29th September, 18S1, when the City of Nelson was by proclamation dividod into four wards, the deceased was elected for the Waimea Ward, and with the late Messrs Edward Everett and William , Akersten, saw the longest terms of service in the City Council. In Friendly Society matters he wa9 also much interested, and passed through the various chairs in both the Foresters' and Oddfellows' Lodges. He was C. R. of Court Robin Hood A.O.F, tor one term, and as a District officer reached the position of .Past Chief Ranger, and was a District Trustee. He has also been a Provincial Grand Master in the Oddfellows. In the early days he joined the Masonic Brotherhood, being a member of the Southern Star Lodge, No. 739, B.C. The late Mr Harley's genial manner, uprightness, and business integrity earned the esteem and good-will of his fellow-citizens, and his death, although not unexpected (deceased having been for some time past in a state of health that has caused aDxiety to his friends), will be learned with much regret. He leaves a widow, one son (Mr C. R. Harley), and a married daughter who will have tho sincere sympathy of a wide circle of relatives and friends. '
