Disastrous Fire at Coliingwoed. THE TOWNSHIP PRACTICALLY DESTROYED. LOSSES ESTIMATED £30,000. INSURANCES OVER £10,000. TWENTY RESIDENTS BURNED OUT, [By Telegraph.— From Our Special ; Correspondent. ] Collingwood, November 7, 1904. About 12.45 this morning a fire broke out in the bakehouse belonging to Mr F. Stallard, situate at the rear of Mr D. Bait's shop, in Tasinan street. A heavy gale of wind was blowing at the time, and the fire spread with great rapidity, and before four o'clock the whole township was practically enveloped in flames. Ovor twenty buildings were destroyed, the loss being as follows : — J. Hargreaves' new butcher's shop and dwelling; F. S tal] a rd's bakery, boarding house, and outbuilding; D. Rait's shop, stables, and outbuildings (premises owned byF. Stallard) ; G. 11. Allan's dwelling house,offices, and printing plant of the "Golden Bay Argus," and outbuildings; R. Ellis' dwelling house and stables; W. Prussing's Post Office Hotel, stables, and outbuildings; R. N. Allan's shop dwelling house, and outbuildings; the Collingwood Pubic Hall; J. Shaw's shop and dwelling (recently purchased from Mr F. A. Stevenson); G. W. Riley's new boarding house and outbuildings; J. M. Davies' boarding house and outbuidings (known as McGrane's) ; E. T. Riley's shop and attachments; J. .Kirk's saddler's shop; J. A. Miles' snop, dwelling, and outbuildings; Post and Telegraph OfGce and dwelling house occupied by P. Hunter: F. Cottier's shop and dwelling ; T. Mortimer's Collingwood Hotel ; Pinkerfcon's outbuildings and stadles; Shaw and Stevens' carpenters' shop. Owing to the rapidity with which the flames spread, very little stock or furniture was saved, and the loss by the fire is estimated at £30,000. A heavy downpour of rain prevented the few dwellings facing the beach from being destroyed. A public meeting will be held tonight to ask Government assistance towards the rebuilding of the township. The population of the town are depressed over the heavy loss sustained, and many families have been practically rendered homeless.
