Death of a True Colonist
[Per United Pukss Association] Wellington, Sept. 27. The Hon. Matthew Holmes, M.L.C., died this morning. Mr Holmes had been more or less invalided for some time and hia death, though comparatively sudden, wae not therefore un expected. He arrived in New Zealand early in the sixties and immediately entered into the business of a pastoralist, gaining a wide reputation as a breeder of pedigree stock. He was appointed to the Legislative Council in 1866. Deceased leaves three eons and three daughters, one of the latter being the wife of the Hon. Geo. McLean.
