— : • The result of the Lancashire Plate, one of the most valuable prizes of the. turf in England, shows that the pheribmen*l eucceßß of the Duke, of Portllpd, and of his colt Donovan, is continuing. The Diike has won almost every great prize of tbe Eaglisb turf this season, and the vie tory of Donovan in the Lancashire Plate can only be regarded as the crowning success of a series of turf: triumpbTifauch as were never before beard of in the history of the sport of borse-racing, achieved by one owner, or by one horse, in the sporting world of England there haY been a disposition to consider tbat Donovan is not an exceptionally good performer, but ratber that he is merely a good colt who has I had the fortune to be running at a time when there were few good borse>7about. The astonishing success which has marked his career has,, however, done much to make everyone admit that he must be a realiy great racehorse, and hia success in I the Lancashire Plate, in which he would have to carry at least 9*t 121 b, an J would have to meet all the best horses in . Eag« land, stamps him as a brilliant performer. He has never started without being, priced, and on almost every occasion he has passed the judge's box with bis field in difficult ties .behind him. Three times only he baa been .defeated— twice as a twp-year.old and once as a three-yeai-old, the latter occasion being by Enthusiast in the Two Thousand Guinea Stakes. In that race Donovan waa second. His first defeat as a two-year- old was received from Chita* bob, to whom he was conceding 131 b weight, the race being the WbiU Buntide Plate, of 4000 soys, at/Manchester. He has now avenged that defeat, as Ohitabob was 'second to him on Saturday. Amongst some of Donovan's great performances this season were bis victories in the Derby and the St. Leger, and also the Prince of Wales Stakes, of 12,000 sove., at Leicester. Altogether this wonderful colt has during his racing career won over L 50,000 in stakes, a feat whicb no other racehorse that ever ran has even approached.
