Betting at the start. —ll to 10 against La Fkcho, 100 to 9 Rueil, 100 to 8 Bonavista, 100 to 7 St. Damien, 100 to G each Llanthony, St. Angelo, and Thessalian, 20 to 1 El Diablo, 25 to 1 Persistive, 40 to 1 Sir Hugo, 06 to 1 Hattield, 100 to 1 each Galeopsis and Bucentaure. Place betting.— 2 to lon La Fleche, 5 to 4 against Bonavista, 2 to 1 Rueil, 3 to 1 each St. Damien and St. Angelo, 100 to 30 each Thessalian and El Diablo, 4 to 1 Llanthony, 5 to 1 each Sir Hugo and Persistive, 8 to 1 Hattield, 100 to 7 Galeopsis, 100 to 6 Bucentaure. There was a tedious delay at the post, the start being much delayed by Galeopsis, who refused to join his horses. There were also several breaks away. At last, however, though nearly half an hour late, down went the i\-\g to a very good start. The pace was good from the jump, yet there was little tailing until Hearing Tottenham Corner, where Thcs&alian was in front attended by Persistive and the French colt Bucentaur. Coming fairly round the corner Bucentaure rushed to the front, and swept round attended by Thessalian, with St. Damiem, Sir Hugo, and La Fleche noxt, in the order named, St. Angelo and El Diablo last. When fairly in the straight, the 100 to 1 Bucentaur was still in front, but was being gradually caught by Sir Hugo, with La Fleche three lengths behind, and being ridden to keep her place, Thessalian meanwhile falling back beaten. At the distance Sir Uugo passed Bucentaure, and La Fleclio, running with great gameness, also passed the French horse, and went on in pursuit of Lord Bradford's colt. The outsider, however, held his own in grand style, and won all out by three parts of a length from the filly, with a length between second and third, and St. Angelo, placed fourth, about another length behind. Thessalian was fifth, St. Damien sixth, Rueil seventh, Llanthony eighth, the very last being Colonel North's El Diablo. Time, 2min 44scc. Total value of the stakes, L7OIO. By Sir Hugo's victory Lord Bradford ■won about L 20.000, besides the value of the race, as he had a wager of LIO.OOO to LIOO taken when the colt was a yearling, and also backed him to win some LIO,OOO ft little while before the race. Though Wisdom's stock have been wonderfully successful for some years past, Sir Hugo is his first Derby winner. No Derby winner has gone out at such long odds as 40 to 1, since Doncaster started at that price in 1873.
