His victory will no doubt mean a big win for the Americans. Woolwinder also ran twice last year, and got a win in the Ahngton Plate at Newmarket. Slieve G-alhon was favcurite for thus Derby on performances.

The King, the Prince of Wales, the Duke of Connaught, and Prince Christian were present at Epsom to see the Derby run. J. Reiff rode the winner, whose opportunity came in making the turn for home. It is considered by sporting men that the behaviour of Slieve Gallion in swerving under pressure and cutting across the oourse, thus losing second place, j : shows that he does not stay, and that probab'.y a mile is as far as he cares to travel.
