FEBRUARY. 2nd. — Arrest of Mr. Macandrew for debt. In his capacitj" as Superintendent he proclaimed his own house (Carisbrooke House) a gaol, and occupied it. 23rd.— First show of stock at Tokomairiro. MARCH. 9th.— Publication of newspaper in Invercargill — Southern News and ioveaux Straits tlerald. 23rd. — Macandrew removed fro office and Commission of Peace by Governor Browne, and his house declared to be not a gaol, he being taken to common gaol. APRIL. 6th. — First public appearance of Volunteer Fire Brigade. Gold exhibited, obtained at Lindis Pass. 20th.— Proclamation (27th ult.) declaring South land a separate province. MAY. 4th.— Floods in Taieri Plain. Most serious for 10 years. 25th.— Election of Superintendent amid great political excitement. Major Richardson, 292; Macandrew, 189 ; McMaster, 106. Mr. W. H. Cutten exonerated by Commission of retaining £50 of Capt. Fraser's money, and unreasonably delaying application for land. JUNE. McGlashan removed from Provincial Treasurership, for allowing Superintendent to employ public moneys for private purposes. 13th.— Official report by Mr. J. T. Thomson, on Tuapeka goldfields. First escort with 509 ounces of gold. 20th.— Official inquiry into wreck of s.s. Victory, at Wickliffe Bay, on July 3rd. George Hand, mate, sentenced to three months lm prisonment for neglect of duty. 27th.— Macandrew's application for release . under imprisonment for debt ordinance refused ; by Judge Gresson. AUGUST. 3rd.— Wreck of s.s. Oberon at Bluff. 18th.— Male and female prisoners escape from Dunedin gaol. SEPTEMBER. 3rd.— First election Invercargill Town Board. 7th.— lmportation of two steam threshing machines, one for Mr. Martin, Tokomairiro, and one for syndicate of Taiew farmers. OCTOBER. Uth.— First coach, Cobb & Co., started for diggings. 12th.— Full summary of goldfields intelligence. 26th —First case of robbery under arms re norted Fourteen persons stuck up during one day and property valued at £300 to £400 taken.

NOVEMBER. Bth.— First cab in Dunedin streets. Detachment of 70th Regiment landed in Dunedin. 15th.— First issue of the Otago Daily Times. Motto—" Inveniam viam aut faciam." 16th.— New goldfleld at Mount Valpy, Capt. Mackenzie's run. DECEMBER. Ist. —Fire at Otngo Daily Times Office, and at Cargill and Co.'s store and Shand's bakery. Damage £10,000. 2nd.— Opening at Dunedin of branch Bank of N.Z. 17th.— s.s. Oscar wrecked at New River. 20th.— Waipori diggings discovered.
