The delay of 10 minutes was principally occaeioMfd l>y the tactics pursued by the" jockey of Be*t« to tecu r e the best of the start. He managed to jump off in front of Persimmon, -who immediately gave way to Bradwaivrinc and B*y Ronald, witli Velasquez in the renr. They raced so to the six-fnrlong po-.t, when Beato vras just clear of Bradwimline, with the others following in single flla. The pace was a " cracker," and Bradwardiue cl*ead with B«ato at the far orner and took the lead into the straight, whereupon Beato was passed by Persimmon and Bay Ronald, with the Fr*»ichinan dropping rapidly astern. In o.restiug the bill Peraimino'n turned on ttftam, and when : he deprived Bradwardine of the commstud at the entrance to the ia s ls the latter *harcd tbe retreat of Beate. ' Second and third places were now held by" Bay Ronald and Velatquez, of whom the thr«e-ya*r-old had been so well husbanded for an efitcri; that as he drew up to the quarters of Per- ' simmon a fight seemed in store. In fact, the far* u rite was for a few strides called upon in earnest, with the result that he forged ahead : again, and won amid n<uch cheering by a couple of lengths ; twice as far between second and third; Beato was bst.
