HAWKE'S BAY STEEPLECHASE MEETING. Friday, Juke 23. The weather was fine and genial. There were no accidents, and the racing was good, though there were no exciting finishes. Norton and The Master led alternately to the back of the course, when Disturbance rushed to the front and Otakeho went into second place, with Chester third. This order was maintained over the water jump the second time round, when Norton again went to the front;, Gondolier, lying handy fourth. At the Sod wall Chester came down, Auckland baulked, and Tiritea began to make up ground fast. The jumps were taken together by the three leaders, bub at the double in front of the stand Disturbance gave place to Shearer, and Gondolier took a decided lead. Tidtea shortly afterwards went into third place, and from this out the race was confined to the three front horses. The double was safely negotiated by Gondolier slightly in front of Norton, Tiritea lying aboub 10 lengths away. Afc the last jump Norton and Gondolier rose together, and loud cries wenb up that the top-weight would win ; but Gondolier came on full of running, and won by three lengths, Tiritea five lengths away third; the rest not finishing. Caloola was coming up fast, when at the sod wall he almost lost his rider, and before Goodwin recovered himself he was several lengths behind. At the double the Shearer was first over, and Tiritea ran round, but Ellingham soon whipped him round and had him over even before Caloola came up. At the gorse The Shearer was over slightly in front of Tiritea, bub aiter this a slashing race ensued between the pair, Tiritea coming away under the whip and winning frora The Shearer by three leDgths, with Caloola a fair third. As soon as the leaders had turned fairly into the straight Orvieto went for an opening between Gangway and Leominbter, and having forced a passage he became a close attendant upon Simonian. At the distance he had assumed the command, and with May Duke j then heading Son of a Gun, Gangway, and ' Leominster in quick succession, ha likewise collared Simonian opposite the public stand. From this point he also reduced the lead of Orvieto, who nevertheless had a bit to finish with, and ridden out ia the last few strides he won very cleverly by half a length ; two lengths between second and third.
