RACING IN ENGLAND.

off a coup, inasmuch as he had backed His Worship to win £500 at the first time of asking after leasing him, and was defeated through his jockey being bad with measles. I learn on pretty good authority—m fact I may say reliable authority—that Fright, the gelding by Newmimter from Coolyrie, imported from Australia and purchased by Mr George Wright for lOgs, w»s priced by Mr W. Douglas, of Hawke's B*y. Mr Douglas offered £150 for the gelding, which offer was refused. I also learn, despite other authorities, that St. Hippo still goes "a bit short." It seems as if they will have all their time to get him fit if ever they race him again. My remark about his three-year-old preparation will be perhaps verified yet. Speaking of the three-year-olds, I hear great promise of Ben Godfrey. This colt comes from the celebrated Phryne strain, by St. Leger from Welcome Katie, by Musket from Dundee's Katie. What better than this could there be for a Derby colt? I like Kapua and Auckland for the Hawke s Bay jumping events. Mr Williamson informs me that in his opinion all the get of Castor will gallop, and that early. This is very good news for Mr Morrin. . A two-year-old by St. Leger from All Steel has arrived from the West Coast, and has, I hear, gone into Frank M'Minnamin's stable. Tulloch has left the care of his late trainer, J. B. Williamson, and now shelters under Adam Byers's careful tuition. Anent the foregoing, has Mr Morrin any yearlings sired by St. Leger ? I fancy he has neglected this young sire, who has proved he can get stayers. Ishould like St. Leger to be removed to Australia. He might then possibly, get a fihow. He certainly has fought his way up in spite of his decriers. The Baron, by Hippocampus from Grand Duchess, has been fired prioc to leasing for stud purposes. Shillelagh, by Hippocampus from Jenny, by Garryowen from Bonny Blink, must receive careful attention for southern jumping events. He is not badly hurt, and if allotted fair weights will visit you. Beware !

In the first half-mile Gamboge beat a retreat, and William carried on the running from Charles 111, Phocion, Best Man, and Belted Earl. Charles 111 compounded at the entrance to the rails, and with William challenged by Phocion and Best Man they did not reach him, and he won cleverly by three-parts of a length. Time, lmin 42 2-ssec. Two or three failures preceded the fall of the flag to a good start, in which St. Jude", in the interest of his stable companion, raced;to the front, followed by Kilmarnock, of whom the latter in the first quarter of a mile broke a blood-vessel and rapidly retired. Second place was then taken by Isinglass from Ravensbury, Raebnrn, Perigord, and Son of a Gun, the last three, except Kilmarnock, being Watch Tower, Royal Harry, and Harbinger. With the completion of half the journey Stf. Jude had shot his bolt, and Royal Harry raced up level with Isinglass. He as quickly dropped back again, and Isinglass then settled down in command from Ravensbury, the pair being just clear at the Bushes of Raeburn, Perigord, Sou of a Gun, and Harbinger in the order named. As they ascended the hill Perigord and Son of a Gun hoisted signals of distress, and Raoburn and Harbinger were bsing hard ridden into the Abingdon mile bottom. This enabled Isinglass and Ravensbury to draw well away, and although the favourite obtained no rest, he always had the trump card in hand, and won cleverly by three-parts of a length. Raelurn was four lengths off third, Harbinger fourth, Perigord fifth, Watch Tower sixth, Son of a Gun seventh, and Sfc. Jude and Kilmarnock tailed off. Time, lmin 42fsec. Valuo of stakes, £4250.

In descending the hill Buccaneer began to labour, and Marcion, full of " go," was followed out of the Abingdon Mile bottom by Windgall, who dropped away in another hundred yards, and Marcion won hands down by five lengths from Buccaneer, a neck between second and third. Time, lmin 45sec. Fbiday, May 5. One Thousand Guineas Stakes, of lOOsova each ; for three-year-old fillies. The owner of the second received 200sovs out of the stakes, and the third saved stake. R.M. Siflkuse in the centre jumped off in front of Dame President, wide on the right. They were followed by Silene in the track of the favourite, who was in turn clear of Medora, and well up on the other side was Evermore, Trussure, Prize, and Dartaway, with Simoon in the rear. Upon the completion of half the journey, Dame President deprived Siffleuse of the command, and at the Bushes they were followed by Silene, Trussure, and Evermore, who at this point got rid of The Priza and Halma. In descending the hill Silene for a few strides managed to split the Falmouth House pair, but she collapsed in the Abington Mile Bottom, and for the last 200 yards was dropping back to Tressure at every stride. la the meantime Dame President was tiring almost to a walk, and with Sitfleuse creeping up, she won on the post by a head ; a length and a-half dividing second and third. Silene was a good fourth, Evermore fifth, Halma sixth, Bonne Sorte seventh, Dartaway eighth, Simoon ninth, and Medora the whipper in. Time, lmin 53sec. Value of the stakes, £5750. CHESTER. Consie was once leading a hundred yards, and upon reaching the stand the second time Gough, under the impression that he had unexpectedly won, began to pull up. After going on again she led until half a mile from home, when she collapsed, together with The Hudson, and Pantagruel assumed the command from Red Eagle, Ragimunde, and Dare Devil. Well as he had won his race at the entrance to the straight, the additional quarter of a mile proved too far for Red Eagle, and in the last hundred yards he succumbed to Dare Devil by three-parts of a length, with Ragimunde beaten not quite so far for second place. Time, 4min 7gsec.
