For a few strides Barrett had to ask Orme a question to shake off Orvieto, who did not relish the quickening of the pace, and having stumbled slightly he at once put his ears back, and ho was easily beaten at the finish by a couple of lengths. Except that Circassian broke down badly, and in consequence, dropped' astern, the troopkept unusually close order before rounding the Ditch gap, after which Brandy, through the disappearance of Golden Drop, assumed the command from Madame Neruda II. ; At the Red Post, just a mile from home, they were attended by Ben Wyviß, Pilot, Versailles, Burnaby, and Sedgechat. At the T.Y.O, "winning post Brandy was still in possession from Madame Neruda II and Burn&by. In the ne^t 100 yds Madame Neruda II beat a retreat, and Brandy was pursued over the Bushes HiU by Pilot," Burnaby, and Versailles. As they descended the mile Brandy rapidly tired, and before entering the Abingdon mile bottom she had, together with Pilot, resigned to Burnaby. For the remainder of the journey Burnaby was drawing away from Brandy and Pilot, whp looked like just keeping Trapezoid out of a situation uutil opposite the principal ring, when Insurance joined issue under a wet sail. The upshot was that he took second place 100 yds from home, and was then beaten two lengths from Burnaby, with Brandy a length and a*half off third, and in turn half a length m front of Pilot, who received notice from the judge. Armorel jumped off in front of Lc Nicham, Milford, Ravensbury, aud Dame President. One of the rearmost places was held by Isinglass, who seemed to dwell as the flag went down. When Armorel resigned to Le Nicham at the Bushes, they were pursued by Dame President, Ravensbury, Raeburn, Silene, and Peppercorn. Half way down the hill the favourite was iv difficulties, and Le Nicbaniled into the bottom from Ravensbury, Silene, Raeburn, Milford and Peppercorn, these being all of a heap and

quite clear of Isinglass, who had been disappointed of an opening. To prevent further complications he was pulled round to the left of Le Nicham, and when his head was pointed straight to the chair, he drew up stride by stride, and eventually won by a length and a-half from Ravensbury, who obtained second money by a neck from Le Nicham, with llaeburn a head behind fourth.
