The pace, it is needless to mention, was strong from the fall of the flag, and with Ratton soon taking a clear lead, his immediate followers, upon settling down, were Screech Owl, Bel Demonio, The Imp, Philomel, and Galway, the tail consisting of Vasistas, Snaar, Llewellyn, and Danbydale. The prominence shown by Philomel, and the ease with which she seemed to maintain her position, was a reminder that Minting two years ago always kept in the first flight, and until approaching the bend her admirers were on rare terms with themselves. Then she went out like the snuff of a candle, and from the entrance to the straight, where Ratton and Screech Owl begaa to compound, Bel Demonio, The Imp, Amphioß, and Galway composed the vanguard, with Laureate, Theophilus, and Vasistas closing up.
