The flat raoing season in England was brought to a close with the Manchester meeting on the 23rd November, and the leading London dailies were out on the Monday with the first batch at statistics for 1889. One of the moat notable features in connection with the racing season now closed is the unprecedented total of tbe winnings of the Duke of Portland. In 1888 he won more than any other owner, and had £26,811 10s placed to his credit, but this year he quite breaks previous records, the sum secured by hiß horses being represented by no lobb than £73,858 10a. The chief factor in the compilation of this amount ia the all-conquering Donovan, who has carried off seven races worth, in thp aggregate, £38,666 153, and other substantial contributors are Ayrshire with £20,665, and Semolina with £9285 Bs. The Duke's success commenced early in the year, for the filly just named won the Brockleaby Stakes at Lincoln, and at tbe Leicester Spring meeting Donovan

commenced his extraordinary throe-year-old career by a very easy viotory in the Prince of Wales Stakes of £11,000. The continuod buoCOBB of the son of Galopin and Mowerina soon set at rest any doubt as to who would head the list of winning owners in November, but it could Bcar.ioly have been thought that the amount earned would reach the enormous total above mentioned. With Buch a large proportion of the rich prizes of the year appropriated by his Grace, the winnings of Mr H. Milner (who comes next in order), though reaching the large total of £21,545 63, are comparatively moderate. To the performances of bis Bmart filly Riviera has to be attributed the greater part of the money j and another filly, Signorina—incomparably the best two-year-old seen out since last March— has all but a few sovereigns won the £11,867 Us which makes the Chevalier Ginistrelli the recipient of the third largest sum for the year. Mr W. de la Ruo and Mr Abington follow in close company, and the case of the latter gentleman affords a striking example of the fluctuating fortunes associated with the following of norseraoing. Ho iB one of the most liberal of turf patrons, and keeps an enormous stud, but as the result of 43 successes he only receives £9410 13 j, and it has taken 27 horses to win it. The casting up of the figures for the recently concluded season results in Galopin maintaining his previous year's position, and, indeed, improving on it. Whereas last year he had only a couple of thousand advantage of bia nearest rival, Isonomy, now more than £8000 separates him from Hampton, The respective figures of the pair are— Galopin, £43,516; Hampton, £35,293. Hampton thus goes up & notch, as he was previously third on the list, a position now filled by St. Simon. This horse,, undefeated throughout bia racing career, has made a remarkably good commencement of stud life, £24,286, gained by two-year-olds; alone, making almost, if not quite, a record;. His chief winners, of course, have been Signorina and Semolina, who between them monopolise all but a little bit of his total. ißonomy has dropped into fourth place, but has over £20,000 to his name, his best representative being Riviera. Springfield as last year is fifth, with almost as high an aggregate. Hermit and Wisdom, then sixth and seventh, bave changed places, the son of Blinkhoolie now heading the Blankney sire by a few hundreds. Mask is the only other whose stock have between won them races running into five figures. Of the other prominent stallions Baroaldine, Petrarch, and Peter each come out well, very Blight intervals separating them, and Oharibert and Sterling are not far behind. The last-named has to thank Enthusiast, the Two Thousand Guineas hero, for the bulk of bis £8424, Oamballo and Robert the Devil have bad many little stakes placed to their oredit, and a few large ones.
