Lord Beresford quickly had them marshalled in line, and after three trifling breaks away the j flag was dropped to a very even start. The first to break the line was Gulliver, on the extreme right, and he showed the way with a slight lead of El Dorado and The Tureophone for about lOOyds, when the last-named, whose mission it was to make the running for his stable companion Donovan, assumed the command, followed by Royal Star and Gulliver ; then came Donovan and Miguel, with Morglay, Enthusiast, and Clover next, clear of Folengo, Pioneer, and El Dorado, with Laureate whipping in. „ The Tureophone made the pace a warm one, and as they swept through the Furzes he had increased his lead to about a length and a-half of Royal Star, who was about twice as far in front of Gulliver and Donovan ; then came Miguel, Morglay, Folengo, and Enthusiast in a cluster, these being clear of Gay Hampton, Pioneer, and Clover, I with El Dorado now in the rear, behind Laureate. At the top of the hill, about six furlongs ' from home, The Tureophone was still leading, followed by Gulliver, Enthusiast, and Royal Star, but here a slight scrimmage occurred, as Gay Hampton swerved on to Clover, who cannoned against El Dorado ; and Tom Cannon, who was riding the last-named, lost a stirrup rein, which he was never able to recover in the race Shortly afterwards Folengo lost bis place and became last, behind Clover, who here broke down. The Tureophone came down the hill and round Tattenham Corner in front of Enthusiast, Miguel, Donovan, and Laureate, but when fairly in the line for home The Tureophone gave way to his stable companion, with Laureate and Miguel next. Directly afterwards Laureate compounded, as did The Tureophone, and Miguel and Donovan singled themselves oat, but j Donovan always had the best of the struggle, and won in a canter by a length and a-half, El Dorado just beating Pioneer about a neck for third place. Gay Hampton was fifth, Morglay sixth, Laureate seventh, Enthusiast eighth, The ' Taroophone ninth, Gulliver tenth, Folengo next, and Royal Star last. Time, 2min 44 2-ssec. Clover broke down badly, and it is doubtful whether the colt will again be seen on a . racecoarse. . '

They reached the poßt without any delay, but two failures occurred before the signal vras given to a good start. Polka, on the outside, and Wishing Gate, on the inside, were the first away, but before going a hundred yards Wishing Gate settled down in front, and was followed by Virgin Queen, Criniere, and Wrinkle, these being succeeded by Dark Blue, Sweetbriar, and Polka, with Seclusion next, the last three being Mintho, Cherry Bounce, and L'Abbesse de Jouarre to the mile post, passing which Wishing Gate had drawn out with a two lengths' lead of Virgin Queen, with Criniere and Polka third and fourth, and Sweetbriar, inclusion, and Wrinkle in close company next in front of Minthe, whilst Cherry Bounce and Dark Blue were the last pair. This order was maintained past the six-furlong poat, but immediately afterwards Virgin Queen died right away and left Wishing Gate with a clear lead of the others, of whom Criniere, Wrinkle, Minthe, and L'Abbesse de Jouarre were the most prominent on entering the straight, with Seclusion next. Wrinkle was the first of this lot to give way, and L'Abbesse de Jouarre drew into second place, with Criniere, Minthe, and Seclusion next, until they were 300 yds from home, when Wishing Gate was beaten, and L'Abbesse de Jouarre looked like winning easily, but Minthe came wjth a wet sail inside the distance, and an exciting race resulted between the pair, but the favourite failed to get up, and was beaten by a neck. Four lengths off Seclusion was third, with Criniere close up fourth, about a head in front of Wishing Gate, who was separated by a long gap from Cherry Bounce, with Wrinkle seventh, Sweetbriar eighth, Helioscene ninth, Polka next, and Dark Blue last.
