Details of the Goodwood race meeting are held over from want of space, but I may note that on the opening day the Stewards' Cup, one of the most popular handicaps of the year, was won by a rare outsider in Captain Machell's often disappointing horse Crafton, better knows as the Kiaber-Chapette colt, who carried 76t 111b, starred at 40 to 1, and was followed home by a 25 to 1 and a 35 to 1 chance in How's That and Lucerne. The field of 25 included Melton, who should scarcely have been started under his crushing weight of lOht 61b ; but his owner was not satisfied with this, for the following day he sent hiiu out for the Chesterfield Cup with again. 10ot 61b up, and again he ran unplaced. This latter race was pulled off by Mr Childwick's Saraband (Bst 51b), who seems to be fast regainiug his brilliant early form. How's That" was again unfortunate enough to run into second place. For disobedience at the post for the Kempton Park July Handicap in July, the starter reported three prominent jockeys — B. Martin, T. Loates, and J. Wall. The stewards of the meeting roferred the case to the stewards of the Jockey Club, who have withdrawn, the riding licenses of the three jockeys named. Minting was officially struck out of the Eclipse Stakes at 4.20 the day before the raco. It appears that after the horse had done his work on Wednesday his near fore leg filled, but the discovery was not made until stable time, when it was too late to communicate with Mr Vyner. The colt was dispatched with others from Newmarket, and duly arrived at Sandown. After a veterinary examination it was decided to withdraw the son of Lord Lyou and Mint Sauce, who was accordingly struck out without the owner attempting to save one sixpence of the money for which the horse had been backed. Bell's Life shortly before its decease offered a prize of £100 to the first tipster who should name correctly tho first three horses in the Derby, first three in the Oaks, and the absolute last horse in the Eclipse Stakes. When the first two races were over it was found that 22 correct tips so far had been sent in, of which 14 were sent in by one individual, who should thus have had a good show of winning the prize ; but unfortanately, instead of picking out the good horses and therefore those most likely to start, he selected tho worst he could, and actually got only one starter — which finished 10th instead of last.
