Melton (trained at Newmarket by Matthew Davrson) was purchased privately from Mr R. Howett for £600 by his present owner, Lord Hastings, and had run but twice prior to winning the Middle Park Plate last year. His first appearance was made at Ascot, when he won the ) New Stakes from eight opponents, among them ! being his stable companion, Langwell, who was made favourite, and his second essay was for the July Stakes at Newmarket, for which Luminary beat him by a head. He won the Middle Park Plate of £3815 from 12 others, of whom Xaintrailles finished . second, Paradox and Royal Hampton a dead-heat for third place. At Newmarket Houghton he won the Criterion Stakes j of 726 soys (9st lib), beating seven others. This season he won the Payne Stakes (worth 900 soys) at Newmarket, and also the Epsom Derby. Isobar did not race until this season and this ! is bis only defeat so far. At -Ascot he won the Rous Memorial Stakes of 1000 soys (w.f.a.), beating Duke of Richmond, Prism, Royal Fern, Lucerne, and Jacob ; while at Liverpool he won the St. George Stakes (worth 800 soys), carrying 9st, and beating The General (Bst 101b), Warspite (Bst 91b), and Ben Venue (Bst 91b). Lonely made her first appearance last year at Newmarket, where, in a match for 200 soys, she beat the Duke of St. Alban's Clonmel by five lengths, the last-named being in receipt of 71b. At the Newmarket Second Spring meeting she won the Breeders' Plate from Grecian Bride, Glenrosa, and four others, but at Ascot could get no nearer than third for the Twenty-seventh Biennial Stakes, Luminary and Child of the Mist filling first and second positions respectively. On the last day of the meeting Cross Keys defeated her by a length for the Windsor Castle Stakes, but at the Newmarket July meeting Lady Clarendon and Sir Plume went down before her in the Exeter Stakes. At Goodwood Lord Cadogan's filly finished second to Satchel for the Levant Stakes, and Hurry, in receipt of 31b, beat her by a head in a match for 300 soys., The Priory Stakes at Lewes next fell to her share, and at the Doncaster meeting she carried off the Rous Plate. At Newmarket October meeting she won the Hopeful Stakes of 867 soys, but in the Middle Park Plate she failed to gain a place. In the Dewhurst Plate, won by Paradox, she was equally unfortunate ; and she wound up the season with still another defeat — in the ! Chesterfield Stakes, of 975 soys, and Derby, won by Redskin.
