The pedigree of Harvester is as follows : —

, Harvester was nominated by Lord Falmouth, 1 but was'sold a month before the rac& to Sir J. Willoughby for £8600. It will bo remembered' that on ' April -30' Harvester rau third for tho Two Thousand * Guineas behind fcicotfree and

St. Medard. the former of whom- 'was not engaged in the Derby, though St. Medard was. As a two-year-old Harvester ran • second to Superba in the Chesterfield Stakes' of 800 sova;> unplaced in the Riohmond^Stakos of 1112 soya, 1 won by Bushey ; unplaced' in 'the Goodwood Rous Memorial Stakes of 1337 soys, won bySuperba; won the Newmarket Triennial Stakes of G7O BOVB, beating eicht others ; won* tho Clearwell Stakes of 927 sovh, defeating four others ; ran unplaced in the Dewhurst Plate of 1407 sovh, won by Queen Adelaide, Busybody second, Fritz third. Harvester is engaged in the Epaom Grand Prize and St. Lager, besides other valuable stakes. Of him the Sportsman^ special commissioner recently wrote i— v Harvester has wintered aß'well as any horse in 1 training, and remained perfectly sound on his limbs. On form he is not so 'good as the Adelaide filly, 1 but' although his fore legs are not so Well put on to his'boQyas the pins of a really high-class Dorby hoi'Bs ought to be,' there ia otherwise a very great deal to like about his vacing-lika top, his length, liberty of action, and greatly-improved muscular development since the autumn. Ho i 3, too, a still improving colt, and if I could ensure his remaining in the care of' Matthew Dawson up to the Derbyday I' should cartaihly recommend him in preference to the daughter of Adelaide. 1 '

St. Gatien is of doubtful parentage on tb» paternal side, but if by Rotherhillhis breeding is good enough, that eire being full brother to Petrarch, winnor of tho Two Tnoufeand and St. Leger, and sire of Busybody. > Rotherhill has, however, been standing at a fee of only 10 guineas. St. Gatien was never mentioned in the Derby betting until April, when be was introduced »t 40 to 1. Last year he \i on all the three races that he started for, but they were of littlo importance. • In the Terldington Two-year- old Plato of 126 1 soys, at Kempton Park, ho beat twr> opponents ; in the John O'Gaunt Plate of 197 soya, at Manchester, he .gave weight away to half-a-dozen others, the best of whom was Koenigin, and boat them easily; and in the Little John Plate nf 146 SOVB, at Nottingham, he gave weight and a beating to four others.' In the last two events he was ridden by John Oaborne, who would probably have the mount, in the Derby, which 'Ooborne has not "won since he steored Pretendor to victory in 1869. -It is an astonishing fact that the Derby ia the only classic race for which St. Gatien waa nominated, and he must therefore be, deemed lucky to have won half of it. Of him Bell's Life wrote recently, "The '■unbeaten St. Gatien 13 mentioned now and then for tho Derby, but aa yet I find to reason to believe in him for either that race or the 'City and 'Suburban, and' reference to the "Guides" will show that 'tho horaea ho beat last year wore of most wretched character. " Commenting 'oii his chances for the City and and Suburban the Sportsman said: — "Though I hold a good opinion of thn merits of hJb. Gfttien, I cannot rccommond his chanco in a race in which jockeyship counts for so much. According to all accounts St. Gatien is a very awkward animal to tide, and for this reason I must decline to advocate his claims. Still, i those who have what aro termed backing books on tho' raco should not lose sight of the fact that the people ■ connected with the colt are numbered amongst quite the shrewdest people on the turf, and I am fully persuaded that moat of the money for whiclnhe-has boen backed t during the past two or three days has beoa on account of tho stable."

Queen Adelaide ran necond to Busybody for the Ono ThousandjG.uineas' on .May 2. , Last year she won the July Stakes of 1490 boys, beating .Archiduc and six more; ran unplaced in the Chesterfield Stakes? of 890 soys, won by Superba,, Harvester* second, Talisman third; unplaced in Richmond Stakes ot 1112 soys, won by Busbey ; ran thirds in the Middle Park Plate of. 2575 boys, won by .Busybody,- Royal Fern snennd ; won the Dewhurst Plate of 1407 sovs^S^t 131b), beating Busybody (9at 21b), Fritz (Siit 91b)j and aev.en .others. Queen Adelaide is; engaged ,ih the Grand Prix de Paris and ; the Doncaster St. ' Leger. Of her the Sportsman's special commissioner recently wrote :—" In referenoe to this great sluahing filly, I, have stated in a previous communication after seeing her at Newmarket, that sho is commencing her preparation with perfectly clean legs, and, for anything I" know to the contrary, • sho is' 1 clear in her wind, notwithstanding that doubts ' have been 'expressed by some people to the contrary. Indeed, the stock of Hermit are, as a whole, free from any wind infirmity. In. ' size, ' length', bone, substance, and' racing-like 'symmetry^ combined with blood-like ■ style and quality, I never saw the superior of this filly, arid but for tho doubts that I havo already expressed I should, without any hesitation, depend on- her alone to win the Derby. One of the precautions al*%ady taken tp assist her ia standing the long and strong gallops that nhe has yet go through is the scoriug of her hoofs. By this remark I may explain to the uninitiated that the hoofs of her fore feet have been cut with a drawing knife in Boveral liuQ3, or " razes," from the coronet to the toe, so as to allow of the feet expanding, and to ameliorate the effects of concussion on the hard ground. This is an old but not common remedy for "hoof-bonnd "and oontraoted feet iv all aorta of horses. The Adelaide filly hasj pot, however, cither very ?ma j^ gr badly

contracted feet, but I regard them as being smaller than they should be for a filly of her size and weight. Sho h, indeed, a heavy raaro . on her legs and feot, and will be' a 'rather difficult sort to keep working if the 'going should become hard between this' period and , tho Derby-day. Oa her two year old. credentials thore ia nothing so , good iin the entries, but independent of my opinion that she will take some care-in hsr • preparation i it must be remembered that sho ia of the softer sox, and will be a^kod to perform a great feat at the, ■ worst^ period of -the season for mares,.. She has ( been in nice steady work over about • one mile'i for moßu of tho winter, but the time id nciw fast approaching when she will have to Jbe sent over longer distances at an increased pace, and . I soaicely need remark that if Jewitt succeedli' j in bringing her to tho post at Epaom quite fit ; and free frouvexcitemont she will, of >course, ■be a very strong favourite when the flag falls.-"; ' A cablegram on Tuesday informed us that a' protest has been lodged against St. Cratien for the Derby, on the grounds t of insufficient entry, and it will be deoided'by- j {jhe,, stewards.... of the Jockey -Club after the Ascot meeting on "j Juno 10.
