But little time was lost at the post, and at a few minutes before 3 the signal was given to an excellent start, Eurus at once dashing away from Stockmar and Retreat, these three settling down in front of Sea Horse, Unready, Sabretache, and Schoolboy, the remainder being headed by Le Destrier and Wallenstein, whilst the whippers-in of the party were Cipolata, PetroneJ, Exeter, and Robert the Devil, At a rattling good pace Eurus brought the field along, and as they passed through the gap some of the rearmost division began to materially improve their positions. As they made their appearance on the flat Retreat, Wallenstein, and Sea Horse were prominent on the right, and on the left the most conspicuous colours were those borne by Jessie Agnes, Chippendale, Eurus, and Caroline. Coming along and when fairly set for home, Retreat was joined by Sea Horse, and the pair came on in close company, attended by Wallenstein, Petronel, and LeDestiier, just aboutclear of Robert the Devil and Ulster, at whose heels sucoeeded Sabretache, Stockmar, and Schoolboy in the centre, and Chippendale, The Star, Cipolata, and Exeter on the left. At the Rowley Mile starting-post Retreat once more quitted Sea Horse , who waa joined by dtockinar, others close up, with the leading trio being Schoolboy, Wallenstein, Ulster, and Petronel, with Robert tha Devil, Cipolata, and Exeter in their immediate track, and The Star heading the remainder, of whom Euruß was by this time well beaten. At the T.Y.C. winningpost Retreat was still heading, but Sea Horse had lost his place, leaving Stockmar in attendance upon the Stanton colt, with the stable companions, Petronel and Ulster, Sea Horse, Wallenstein, Schoolboy, Robert the Devil, and Cipolata next. Half way up the ascent to the Bushes Petronel and Ulster were in trouble, and Chippendale rapidly improving his pace, joined company with Robert the Devil and Cipolafca. On the brow of the hill Retreat held an advantage of about a length of Schoolboy and Stockmar, who were in turn a couple of lengths clear of Robert the Devil, Cipolata, and Chippendale, these in turn being separated by a clear gap of daylight from The Star, Ulster, Petronel, Sea Horse, and Wallenatein; whilst the last lot comprised Roehampton, Pacific, Eurua, Caroline, and Jessie Agnes. Half way down the hill Schoolboy headed Retreat, and the pair were followed by Robert the Devil, about half a length in front of Cipolata, with Chippendale and The Star in hot pursuit. The two leaders were in trouble when they went into the Abingden Mile Bottom, but it was not until the ascent for home was fairly collared that Retreat dropped right away, and Robert the Devil joined Schooboy, with Cipolata, The Star, and Chippendale close up. A change, however, quickly came over the scene, for the moment Cannon allowed Robert the Devil to have his head, the St. Leger here dashed up the hill full of running, and leaving Cipolata stride by stride, and apparently without the slightest effort, he eventually cantered past the post the easiest of winners by four lengths The Star passed Chippendale and Schoolboy pulling up, and was beaten by a length from Cipolata for second honours. Retreat was fourth at a clear interval, Chippendale fifth Schoolboy sixth, Petronel seventh, Ulster eighth, Stockmar ninth, Exeter, Le Destrier, Sea Horse, and Unready next, and Pacific and liar us were last, with the exception of Caro. line, who walked in lame. RACE When the flag fell the posi«ODß at the post were as follow :— On the right were Linnaeus, the filly by Hermit out of Rylatone'a dam, Fiddler, Napoleon V, Tunis, wd Masfceiyne;

on the left Geologist, Bal Gal, Lucy Glitters, and Albion ; and in the centre Josyan, Town Moor^ Montrose, the filly by Macaroni out of Sunshine, St. Louis, and King of Scotland. There was but little delay before the signal was given, the flag falling at the first attempt to a good start. As soon as the lot werafairly on their legs the Rylejtone's dam filly, on the right, showed in front of Fiddler and Linnseu", who were clear of Tunis, Maskelyne, and_ Napoleon V, on the left ; Montrose and Albion were in front of Lucy Glitters, Sir Marmaduke, Geologist, and Bal Gal, of whom the last-named appeared to be outpaced, while in front of the centre lot were King of Scotland and Town Moor. After covering about two furlongg, Lucy Glitters settled down with the lead, and made the running, followed over Bushes Hill by Town Moor, St. Louis, Bal Gal, the Rylestone's dam filly, and Geologist. In descending the hill Archer called resolutely upon Bal Gal without materially improving her position, and with Lucy Glitters and Town Moor in trouble in the dip St. Louis immediately shot out with a clear lead and won in a canter by three lengths ; a head only separated second and third. Bal Gal was fourth, Sir Marmaduke fifth, four or five lengths away, and in turn clear of the Rylestone's dam filly, who was sixth ; Montrose was seventh, Tunis and Geologist next, and the last lot comprised the French pair, Josyan and Liniiseus.
