DUNEDIN FIELD CLUB.

Last Saturday being a holiday, tho members met at, 9,30 a.m., at the corner of Du!;c and George- elrocls, tho destination for the clay being Swampy Hill. Starting punctually, the party foll&syed tho Leith road for some distance, and then turned up to Ross's clearing, and thenco into tho welcome 6hado of tho bush. During the climb, up tho track nothing fresh was found, although there was a lot to bo seen, in the wav of ferns, etc., arid a sharp lookout was kept for the silver-leaved hcc-fcni (Cyathea deal■bata), the spores of. which several members wished to collect; but in this they wcro unsuccessful. On reaching tho open hillside above tho bush, a halt was called to allow some of the members to catch up. After a short spell the cliniu up tho ridge was resumed, the party gradually working along to tho connecting ridge between Flagstaff Hill and Swampy. Ono or two Gaultlieria>3 were met with on tho way up, and oven on these hardy plants, the late drought had had effect, and the members found it very difficult to walk on the slippery grass, which latter, combined with the hot sun, made several halts necessary before the ridge was gained. Here a cool breeze soon refreshed the party, and a good deal of ground was covered in a short time, so that, when lunch was proposed, tho climb up Swampy had begun. Having lunched and rested for half an hour or so, tho last part of the climb. was entered upon, and some collecting , was done, Caprcsma rhamnoides, with its bright red berries, and Pratia angulata. with its curiously-shaped purplish fruits, being the most interesting of those found. Further up the hill the effects of fires wore Goon, nothing being met with till tile ton was reached, and ■tho swamps were safely crossed, when the pretty little white-flowered Forstora Bidwillii and Pentachondra frumHα, with its small rod berries, wore found to bo very abundant, Pratia bein? found in flower somewhat sparingly. On reaching the top of tho hill, Ihe party l rested for some timp, enjoying;, tho slorioua view, and discussing ways and means of returning homo, several members deciding to go on to tho Waitati intake, returning via Iho Loith Saddle and A 7 alle.v.' The vest .returned across the swarm) and down the first ridge, striking the Loith Valley a little way above Morrison's Creek. One of the party had brought.a, not., and, while on Ihe swamp, tried eeveral of the ponds, but nothing was found except draion-flv larvro and water boatmen and beetles. On the way down through the ecnib several plants were met willi, among others being being R-aoulia glabra, the pretty Goniiana, montana, Ovathodes aeercsa, and Coprosma ritridin. Tho noxt excursion will he to Signal Hill, and take; place on the 61<h April.
