POLISH TROOPS

MASSING DENIED GERMAN ALLEGATIONS THE FRONTIER OF DANZIG FAMILIAR TYPE OF CLAIM By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright (Received August 25, 0.30 p.m.) LONDON, Aug. 25 German reports of vast Polish troop concentration on the Danzig frontier are described in Warsaw as "inventions in order to suggest that Poland is the aggressor." The Polish War Office denies that Danzig is surrounded by a large Polish force. The German official news agency had alleged earlier that Polish forces, in war strength, had encircled Danzig and the danger of an imminent coup d'etat was great. Mr. Chamberlain's speech had increased tension, it was said, and caused hope to fade that European problems could be solved without bloodshed. A statement issued by the German official news agency says the war spirit of the Polish Army has reached a climax. The Polish press, it adds, is sounding the drum for an offensive war and the Army is hourly waiting the command to strike. In these circumstances it is considered most probable that the Polish troops will lose their nerve in their reliance upon the help of Western democracies. The Government is no longer master of Army decisions. Alarming reports are pouring in from all parts of the country, the statement alleges, leading to the sure conclusion that local commanders are no longer obeying Warsaw's orders, and are determined to march oil their own responsibility. The statement is considered ominous, as almost identically similar statements were issued prior to the German coups in Austria and Czechoslovakia.
