STILL GRAVE

DANZIG CRISIS CUSTOMS DISPUTE PARTIAL SETTLEMENT SEQUEL TO ULTIMATUM POLAND'S FIRM STAND By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright LONDON, Aug. G A grave crisis has been averted as the result of Danzig's assurance that Polish Customs officials will not be prevented from carrying out their duties, says a message from Warsaw. The Senate previously had sent a letter to 83 of the 110 officials, ordering them to give up their posts and leave Danzig before Sunday.

Poland thereupon, issued a stern ultimatum, complaining of a flagrant violation of the Polo-Danzig agreement, and gave the Senate until last evening to cancel the orders. This was the first actual ultimatum from Poland since the Danzig question became acute. A Senate official advised Warsaw by telephone of the cancellation of the orders a few hours before the expiry of the time limit. Union with Nazis a Cause for War The situation is still grave. Poland has sent a further Note to Danzig hoping the Nazis would study the position with a view to reaching a positive understanding. A detailed .reply is expected from the Senate to-morrow. The Polish spokesman announced that Danzig's move to destroy Poland's Customs rights was most serious. If Danzig attempted to form a Customs union with Germany, it would be regarded as a cause for war. "We did not begin the Danzig affair and we will not avoid our obligations, but will' adjust our actions in Danzig to those of the opposing side," said Marshal Smigly-Rydz, Polish Army Chief, addressing ' an assembly of 100,000 people at Cracow on the 25th anniversary of the march to the front of the first Polish legion. Repel Violence with all Forces

Marshal Smigly-Rydz added: "We have no aggressive intentions, but snatt resist all without exception who attempt directly or indirectly, to infringe the rights and dignity of our State. Poland intends to repel violence with all her forces. To-day when the words 'war' and 'peace' are on everyone's lips, we declare that we love peace as much as anyone, but there cannot be peace which means take for one people and give for another. "Danzig is the lung of our economic organisation and has been united to Poland for centuries. We have made our viewpoint very clear.. It is my duty to say, with deep emotion, that we have friends . among , the nations who understand the essential meanings of things and have formulated , their attitude toward us." Cheers and cries of "We will never yield Danzig,';' punctuated the, speech.

Eve of New World War General Kazimierz'Soskowski, Inspector of the Polish Army,' in a statement at Warsaw, said: "Mankind is on the eve of a new world war in which Poland

will bo one of the most exposed participants. Twenty years after obtaining independence Poland is facing the task of safeguarding and cementing that independence again. If necessary we must take up the sword in order that our work shall not be disturbed for at least 50 years. "The late Marshal Pilsudski's Legionnaires are particularly favoured by history, because it seenls tlnlt they will participate' in a second international war in which Poland will be ono of the most important and most exposed actors in the drama. "It seems that after 20 years the main act of stabilising Polish independence is beginning."
