DANZIG SITUATION WORSE GERMAN TROOP MOVEMENTS FRANCE PREPARING DEFENCES Disturbing news from various sources in Europe has aroused fears that Germany plans early action to restore to the Reich the so-called Free City of Danzig, where the situation is reported to have changed for the worse. Nazis are entering Danzig in large numbers and apparently n. Free Corps, similar to that organised in Czecho-Slovakia last year, has been formed there. The Danzig press assures the inhabitants that the "hour of decision" is near, and Germany will assist therri. Movements of large bodies of German troops to the Rhine frontier are reported, as though Germany were preparing to defend herself in the west should Britain and France attack her -in fulfilment of their pledge to Poland. Italian troop trains are reported to be on the move, and France is looking to her defences on the Italian frontier. The British Empire's determination to resist further aggression with 'all its strength was again made clear by the Foreign Secretary, Viscount Halifax, in a speech which drew the usual sneers and accusations of "encirclement" from the German press and was "jammed" for Italian radio listeners. Mr. Arthur Greenwood, acting-Leader of the Opposition in the House of Commons, pledged the Labour Party to fight in the event of a German challenge. Meanwhile, in Moscow, an official Soviet spokesman said the British and French efforts to reach an agreement with Russia • for mutual assistance have "entered a blind alley," asserted that Russia will riot "play the part of a hired man," and expressed distrust of the Anglo-French motives. In the United States Congress a bitter battle is being waged over the new neutrality legislation.
