POST FOR DR. L. H. BRIGGS

FINE SCHOLASTIC CAREER

The appointment of Dr. L. H. Briggt, as lecturer in organic chemistry at Auckland University College, in succession to Dr. W. F. Short, who re'cently resigned' the position, has been announced by th#l college council.

Dr. Briggs, who is an old boy of thr Auckland Grammar School, took his torate in philosophy at Oxford last year. His scholastic career has been a brilliant' one and he is only 28 years of age. Hsi was awarded a junior national scholarship in .L 917 and the next year received a senior.. scholarship, matriculating in 1920. In 1923 he was awarded the Williamson scholarship, taking a university entrance scholarship in the year following. I>y 1926 he had completed his B.Sc. degree at Auckland University College, and in the following year graduated mas-f teT of arts. In the next four years ha won the Duffus Lubecki Research scholar-. ship, the New Zealand National Research scholarship and the Sir James Gunsoa scholarship in dairy science. During 1929 and 1930 he undertook independent research at Masse'y Agricultural College.l 1 ollowing this Dr. Briggs went to Oxford, where he took his doctorate of philosophy in 1932. The same year he \va» successful in gaining the Oxford Exhibition of the British Association for the -Advancement of Science. Dr. Brigcs is tha author of various published papers oa chemical research.
