OBITUARY.

We regret to notice in our obituary columns the announcement of the death, in his 78rd year, of Mr. James Green, of Mount Eden. Mr. Green was an old eettler in Auckland, and was much respected by a wide circle of friends.

We regret very much to notice the announcement, in our obituary column, of the decease, at the ripe old age of 80 years, of William Powditch, Esq., one of our oldest and most respected settlers. Mr. Powditch arrived in Auckland from the Bay of Islands in 1845. In 1857, being member for Onehunga, he succeeded T. H. Bartley, Esq., as Speaker of the Provincial Council, a post which he filled until the year 1866, when he was defeated for Onehunga in a contested election by G. M. O'Rorke, Esq. Ho subsequently received tho appointment of Deputy Provincial Auditor, a post which he held until his death. He was also in the early days Chairman of the first Auckland Harbour Board of Commissioners Mr. Powditch took a lively interest in all matters of local import, and even until a very brief period before his death was active in the possession of unimpaired faculties and good health.
