Notb. — It is auppoied that Mr Shaw, the defeated candidate for Wostland, will petition against the return of Mr Moorhouso, and there is a great probability that his prayer will be granted. It appears tli.it a sitting member (Mr Moorhouse had been previously elected for Mount Herbert) cannot be returned for another constituency ; and if the English Parliamentary usage be the rule by which the matter ii to be settled it will no doubt turn out that Mr Shaw ii the member for Westland. In England, the provisiou which entitles & member to elect between two refers only to a case in which a double election ha» taken place inadvertently and contemporaneously. It appears that had there not been another candidate than Mr Moorhouso in the field for Westland, the seat would now have been vacant, und a new writ must have been iiaued.
