The Chester Cup was won on the 10th of May by Captain Lane's Epaminondas, by Epirus, 3 years, carrying 4st. lOlbs,, beating Indian Warrior, Acrobat, Peggy, Newminster, Cobnut, Annie Sutherland, Lancashire Lass, Catspaw, Aldford, Sandhurst, Dear me, Tom, Eva, Domino, Star of Surrey, Sir James Graham, Jack Frost, Dr. O'Toole, Baalbec, Lurley, St. Clair, Jujube, and Jephson. Bettiog at starting 6 to 1 against Dr. O'Toole, 1 1 to 1 against Newminster, 100 to 8 against Cobnut, 25 to 1 against Epaminondas. After several failures, a pretty good start was effected, Indian Warrior, Peggy, and Catspaw leading, who were however quickly overhauled and passed by Baalbec and Tom. Before passing the T. V, C. post several changes had occurred;, and Epaminondas, Newminster, and Acrobat had approached the leading horses. Before reaching the Governor's bridge, Newminster broke down, and Indian Warrior took his place as third, Acrobat leading. On entering the straight running Acrobat was in trouble, and an exciting struggle ensued between Epaminondas and Indian Warrior, the former winning by a length. Time, 4 mm. 12 sec; distance, 2 miles and a quarter. Tub Derby was won on the 31st of May, by Mr. Gully's Andover, by Bay Middleton (A. Day), beating King Tom, Hermit, The Early Bird, Dervish, Autocrat, Woodcote, Hospodar, Welham, The First Lord, Marc Antony, Middlesex, Canute, Winkfield, Punch Box, Greyi .Plover, Neville, Bracken, New Warrior, Papageno, Knight of St. George, Alembic, Rodo Mcli, Coup D*Etat, Wild Huntsman, Champagne, and Marsyas. Betting at starting 5 to 2 against Dervish, 7 to 2 against Andover, 8 to 1 against King Tom, 10 to 1 against Wild Huntsman. After a little delay, caused by the fractiousness of Autocrat, who fell in one of the ruts on the side, the lot got away, Hospodar taking a clear lead, followed by Canute, Bracken, Winkfield, and Punchbox, in a body, Andover and Dervish being last but two from the post, but on descending the hill they began to take more forward positions. At Tattenham Corner, Hospodar and Marc Antony were in trouble, and several others showed some symptoms of defeat. Hermit now went to the front, and made the running first rate, Dervish second pulling double, closely attended by Andover, King Tom, and Early Bird. In this way the five horsesjnamed ran past the distance post, when Hermit beginning to tire, Andover took up the running, and at the tame moment Templeman on Dervish attempted to go out, but although the favourite had looked the winner, he. wguld not answer the call, and at the stand was passed by King Tom, who made a gallant effort to pass Andover, but was beaten by a length. Time, 2 miv. 52 sec. Andover by Bay Middleton out of a Defiance mare; her dam by the Colonel. The Oaks was won on the 2nd of June, by Mr. Cookeon'a Mincemeat, by Sweetmeat, beating Meteora, Bribery, Ladybird, Sortie, Diana, Strutaway, Malmsey, Reveille, Jfoaay•uckle, Apropos, Hopeful Filly, . Baltodn*, Mishap, and Auttrey. Betting, 6 to 4 on Meteora, 4 to 1 again*' Bribery, 10 to 1 against Mincemeat. An exciting race terminated by Mincemeat beattog the favourite by a length and a half.
