Our Wellington dates by the Sea Belle, are to the 14th instant. The Memorial to Sir George Grey, praying his Excellency to suspend the Act of Parliament of last Session, and to revive the Land Claimants' Ordinance and the Government Pastoral Regulations, was signed by seven hundred and seventy-seven persons. His Excellency has, we understand, determined to resume the issue of Crown Grants under the Ordinance above named ; but no intimation has yet been given by his Excellency of an intention to carry out the remaining provisions of that measure, or to settle the pasturage question. The Midlothian sailed on the 6ih instant, with a cargo valued at the Custom House at £21,290 2s. 9d. A dinner was given to Captain Gibson, by the Merchants of Wellington, on the eve i of the vessel sailing ; and on proposing the health of their guest, the chairman, Captain Rhodes, took occasion to remark that /Captain Gibson had promised, on his arrival in England, to use his best endeavours to induce the Steam Navigation Company to send a steamer out to this colony. The papers speak of some public works of great utility which are forthwith to be commenced. A contract has been taken for reclaiming from the sea a portion- of Lambton Harbour, 300 feet long, and 100 in breadth, at a cost of £1,030. This is to be completed within nine months, when, on the land being sold for building sites, a further portion of the harbour will be reclaimed, and so on until the whole is taken in, in a line from Willis Street to Papitea Point. It has been decided by the Government that the proper site for a lighthouse is Pencarrow Head, and we have the authority of the Spectator for saying, that an iron one will be immediately ordered from England. There is also a new Gaol to be erected of stone, with a frontage of 165 feet, and a depth in the wings of eighty-two feet ; a Catholic College, and a Bank and banker's residence, for the Union Bank of Australia — so that the building trade will be brisk in Wellington. The Independent, like ourselves, is sceptical as to Mr. Fox's appointment to succeed Mr. Godley at Canterbury, and considers that Mr. Fox would be deserting his post at a most critical period, were he to leave London before the Session of Parliament. The schooner Salopian has been lost on the East Coast. She had taken in 1,000 bushels of (wheat at Aurivi, and proceeded to sea, but was found very leaky, and foundered before she could regain the harbour. No lives were sacrificed, but everything on board was lost. The Government brig sailed for Auckland on the 4th, with his Excellency [Lieutenant Governor Wynyard.

The children of the various schools in Wellington were feasted on Easter Monday. We are glad to hear that great progress has lately been made in imparting instruction o the rising generation of the settlement. The William Alfred, from Sydney, had brought back s9veral colonists who had been attracted to New South Wales by the gold fields, but who had not had their expectations realized. The Market prices were, for flour, 345. to 365. per 100 lbs.; fresh meat, 4d. to 6d. per lb.; butter, Is. to Is. 3d.; potatoes, 3s. 6d. per cwt.
