NELSON LITERARY INSTITUTION.

We are glad to announce that the library of our Institution has received a valuable accession of books by the Indian, thfe donations of friends of the colony in England ; and we see that the New Zealand Journal is calling upon persons at home to adopt a suggestion of Mr. Fox, namely, to present to the different institutions in the colony their " used books." The following is a list of the donations just received : — From the Bishop of Chester (Dr. J. B. Sumner), a copy of his works, contained in li-voks. From G. T. Fox, Esq., of Durham : Universal History, 60 vols. ; Knight's Weekly Library, £ vols., comprising, William C** r ton ; Tales of the Fiord, by Miss Martineau ;'» v Textile Manufactures of Great Britain; Mind among the Spindles ; Tasso's Jerusalem Delivered (translated) ; Englishwoman in Egypt, by Miss Law ; Lamb's Tales \, from Shakspeare : Roscoe's Lorenzo de Medici, 1 vol., and Leo X., 2 vols. ; Guizot's English Revolution, 1 vol. Files of newspapers, from the proprietor of St* Paul's Coffee House, 15, Newgate-street, and the New Zealand Company. The Proceedings of the World's Temperance Convocation, by the Temperance Society* Iv addition to the above, a valuable work* on the Industrial Resources of Ireland, by Dr. Kane, was lately presented us, we beilieve by the Company. In a short time, perhaps by the next vessel from England, we shall receive copies of the chief periodical literature of the day, with many valuable books, and the arrangements which have been made, will ensure us a constant supply in future. We may therefore, we think, say, that our institution will henceforth possess an attractive library, which in a few years will be of considerable value, and tend greatly to keep the rising generation of tbe colony up to the march of improvement which is taking place among all classes in our mother-country. We may here mention that at the present moment there arc eight applicants for admission to the institution, and we have no doubt that in a few mouths, when our periodicals arrive, the number of members will be still further augmented, and we shall then hope to steea new spirit given to its management.
